The ferret is a domesticated mammal of the type Mustela putorius furo.
Ferrets are members of the Mustelid family which also includes weasels, stoats, polecats, martens, mink, badgers and otters.
Ferrets are crepuscular, which means they spend 14–18 hours a day asleep and are most active around the hours of dawn and dusk.
A group of ferrets is commonly referred to as a "business" or a "fesnyng".
Ferrets can live up to 10-13 years.
Male ferrets are called hobs and female ferrets are jills.
A spayed female is a sprite, a neutered male a hobble.
A vasectomised male is known as a hoblet.
A baby ferret is called a kit.
Ferrets are obligate carnivores which means they depend solely on the nutrients found in animal flesh for their survival.The natural diet of their wild ancestors consisted of whole small prey, meat, organs, bones, skin, feathers, and fur.
Ferrets are lactose intolerant.
